Why Your Water Smells Like Rotten Eggs

That smell is hydrogen sulfide gas. Check the drain first: UGA Extension says bacteria growing in the drain are the most common cause of a rotten-egg smell at the tap. When it’s in the water itself, the Florida Department of Health says it can occur in wells anywhere in Florida: naturally in groundwater, from sulfur bacteria in the well or plumbing, from reactions inside a water heater, or rarely from pollution. It’s usually a nuisance rather than a health risk, but it can leave laundry smelling, and the Minnesota Department of Health lists black stains on silverware and fixtures and corrosion on pipes among its signs.

  • Rotten-egg smell at the tap or in the shower
  • A smell that’s stronger with hot water
  • A smell that’s strongest when the tap first opens
  • Laundry that comes out smelling
  • Black stains on silverware and fixtures
  • Corrosion on pipes and metal parts
Find the source first. The Minnesota Department of Health says that step tells you which treatment is best, and a drain or water heater problem doesn’t need a whole-home system at all. When the smell is in your water, we test it for free, walk you through what it shows, and recommend one system built around it.
Smell Guide

What the Smell Is Telling You

Two quick checks before you buy anything. First, compare your hot and cold faucets. The Florida Department of Health uses that check to narrow down where a rotten-egg smell comes from. Second, if both hot and cold smell but only at one or a few sinks, fill a glass at one of them, step away from the sink and swirl it. If the water in the glass doesn’t smell, the odor is coming from the drain, not your water (UGA Extension).

Well Water: Rotten Eggs All the Time
If hot and cold both smell and it doesn’t fade, it’s most likely hydrogen sulfide in the groundwater that feeds your well. Treatment for this usually goes on the whole house.
Rotten Eggs That Fade as the Water Runs
Likely sulfur bacteria in the well or plumbing. Disinfecting the well and plumbing is the usual first step.
Rotten Eggs From Hot Water Only
Likely the water heater. Its magnesium anode rod can react with sulfate in the water, and a plumber can swap it for an aluminum rod.
Only Softened Water Smells
Likely sulfur bacteria growing inside the water softener. The softener needs to be disinfected.
City Water: Rotten Eggs
If it isn’t the drain or the water heater, call your water utility or county health department right away, as UGA Extension advises.
Bleach or Pool Smell
Chlorine or chloramine your utility adds to keep city water safe. Our Whole-Home Water System Package includes carbon filtration for that taste and smell.
Musty or Earthy
Most often the drain, so try the glass test. On a well, iron bacteria can also make water smell swampy or musty.
Metallic Taste or Orange Stains
Orange or reddish stains usually mean iron. The EPA ties a metallic taste to several things, including iron, copper, manganese and corrosive water.
Gasoline or Solvent Smell
Rare but potentially serious. Stop drinking the water and call your county health department.

Based on guidance from the Florida Department of Health, UGA Extension, Penn State Extension, the Minnesota Department of Health and the EPA. Our free water test is about choosing equipment: we look at what’s behind the smell and match a system to it.

Questions, Answered

Sulfur Water Questions

It’s hydrogen sulfide gas. UGA Extension says the most common cause of a rotten-egg or sewage smell at the tap is bacteria growing in the drain, so try the glass test first. When it’s in the water itself, the Florida Department of Health says the gas can occur naturally in groundwater, sulfur bacteria in the well or plumbing can create it, reactions inside a water heater can cause it, and in rare cases pollution can. People can smell it at very low levels, and it’s often strongest at a hot faucet because heat drives the gas out of the water.

Usually it’s a nuisance rather than a health risk. The Florida Department of Health says sulfur bacteria are not harmful and that the smell usually doesn’t tell you how clean the water is, and Penn State Extension notes your nose picks up hydrogen sulfide well before it causes health concerns. The Florida Department of Health still strongly recommends testing private wells for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year, and again whenever the taste, odor or color changes. Your county health department can help you collect and test samples. Our free water test is about choosing equipment.

That usually points to the water heater. Many water heaters have a magnesium anode rod that can react with sulfate in the water and make hydrogen sulfide. Penn State Extension says swapping it for an aluminum rod should get rid of the odor while still protecting the tank from corrosion, and the Minnesota Department of Health recommends having a plumber or water system professional do the work. If that’s your only problem, a new rod may be all you need.

If both the hot and cold water smell, but only at one or a few sinks, try UGA Extension’s glass test. Fill a glass at one of those sinks, step away from the sink and swirl the water a few times. If the water in the glass doesn’t smell, the odor is coming from the drain, and cleaning and disinfecting the drain should take care of it. If the glass smells too, the drain isn’t the problem.

Water utilities add chlorine or chloramine to keep water safe on its way to your home. Collier County treats its water with chloramines, and the City of Fort Myers uses chlorine. Our Whole-Home Water System Package includes carbon filtration for chlorine and chloramine taste and smell.

It depends on what’s causing the smell, so we price it after your free quote or water test, with installation included. Financing options are available for qualified homeowners.
